Guys consider video gaming their turf, its as simple as that.

speaking as a guy, this whole issue of sexual harassment and abuse is indicative of a FAR larger problem with patriarchal culture as a whole; just look at slurs–age-old and still used today–such as “you fight like a girl” and so on. we are taught as children that women are “weak things” that “should be protected”, that cannot “fend for themselves”. i say this not in a sexist manner, for that is not my intent. rather, i am attempting to say that gaming is–by and large–considered the last refuge of the dark-side of masculine culture that was so characteristic of the 1850′s and 60′s South up through the civil war: that a man can only be a “man” if he dominates and has total control over something, whether that’s his wife and daughters or–before the US Civil War–his slaves. with that cultural anachronism and perversion in mind, that a man would lose to a woman, in what is considered to be exclusive province–that he would lose to someone who is considered within the bounds of the internet to be utterly servile in every sense of the word–is a logical and cultural fallacy, and in my honest opinion, a direct reflection of the true nature of gender relations and western culture.

“Nowadays, women are slaves to an image they can never achieve, made
willing and–most often–blind connoisseurs to a society that tells them
that without a perfect body and makeup, they are not a person.”

Okay, I can see how you might have meant this sentence differently, but this is one of those arguments that always pushes my buttons, so I’m going to rant about it anyway.

It’s pretty tiresome how so many people lean on body image and the media to explain how women are still subjugated, as if every day is a struggle to even feel self-worth. I know that that is indeed a problem, but it also carries the implication that men lead a flawless, easy life with no pressure on self-image. I could buy an argument that says there are more roles, socially, that men can choose to occupy, but that doesn’t mean there still aren’t pressures on them to conform. Men get just as much pressure from their peers and the media to have certain body types or goals or aspirations or anything else.

You’re right, being a woman in today’s society isn’t all sunshine and bunnies, but it’s hardly a bouqet of rainbows for men, either. And I know that that argument is going to pop up more on a site like this, specifically targeting treatment of women, but one of the ways we can get past all this petty gender fighting is if we all shut up and realize we face the same (or at the very least, similar) issues, and stop fighting about who has it worse. In this regard, video games, women probably do have it worse, but you can’t entirely blame on that on society at large when things are horrible for everybody.

@ uedou – how many online women gamers do you encounter asking male gamers to show them their dicks? Or attempting to invalidate them simply based on gender? It just doesn’t happen. Whilst I agree that in most other areas explicit misandry is becoming as much a problem as misogyny, in this particular respect igender-based harassment – always male on female – is simply an unacceptable part of gaming culture which is sickening and seems to be going pretty much uncorrected.

not always the case that children are taught to see women as the weaker sex. my family was taught to respect women, even the lowest idiotic of men will still defend their mother or sister if they were subject of target insults.

things like “hit like a girl” is meant to be weak? you ever been hit by a girl?? they bloody hurt cos they are smart to know where it hurts us more.

growing up with 3 females in my teenage years … i know women arent weak, they give as good as they get, and when they are moody you get away as far as you can cos you have no chance! lol

speaking as an PS3 gamer here, dont know anything about the social controls on an Xbox, but does Xbox give you the option to filter who you get messages from?

For example on my PSN account, i only recieve messages from those in my friends list everyone else cant send to me.

tbh, if i had “recieve from everyone” set on, thern i’d be responsible for letting the crap get through to me, whether or not its right or wrong for that person to send me the message.

does he Xbox/Live give their users the option to choose who can message them?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kroscovius Krista Roscovius

Apparently it does. I say apparently because I’ve never felt the need to have mine set that way, so I had to look it up for myself ^^ You can also, of course, block people who have offended you.

But I hardly see that as something that should be default. If I leave my messages unfiltered, and amongst the dozen polite, well-meaning messages I get I receive one ugly, insulting one, I’m not responsible for that. Only the idiot who sent it is. And I will happily report their ass, then block them.

DO YOU REALLY EXPECT A MAN LIKE PIMPgodRAMBO TO SPEAK IN TINY ASS LETTERS?  FUCK NO

CALLING ME A TROLL, MISSING THE POINT.

WE GOT FOLKS RUNNIN UP ON TERRORISTS OUT AT WAR, COMING HOME TO DEAL WITH THE FACT THAT THEY HAD TO SHOOT A KID WHO HAD A BOMB STRAPPED TO HIM, AND YALL MAD BECAUSE SOME DUMB ASS IN ANOTHER STATE SAID SOME NASTY SHIT ONLINE.

SOCIETY NEEDS A LOT OF HELP NO DOUBT, BUT THIS KIND OF SHIT IS SILLY.

    PEACE.

So because there are bigger, more important issues out there, we’re not allowed to care about this kind of harassment? If you’re so upset by the site in general, why are you taking the time to type the URL into your browser? Surely you’d rather visit CNN and spam the comment sections on those big news stories with your all caps, poorly written rants. Maybe someone over there will take you a little more seriously than us unimportant individuals.

Read my post again and you’ll see that I wasn’t addressing online interaction. My point was regarding the other areas. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think treatment of females in gaming was disgusting, and you have no opponent on that issue in me.

Whoa, wait– you get polite, well-meaning messages?  I think that’s the strangest thing I’ve heard on this site!

Sorry Rambo – what was that? I can barely make out what you’re saying :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/kroscovius Krista Roscovius

Oh yes. Not from randoms (I rarely receive messages from randoms). But I have lots of friends on Live, both male and female alike, and they do cool stuff like invite me to games and ask what I think of an upcoming game (the latter they do quite a lot, interestingly).

There are GOOD people in the world! :D

Ah! Okay, that makes much more sense to me.

”In this regard, video games, women probably do have it worse, but you
can’t entirely blame on that on society at large when things are
    horrible for everybody.”

I dun’ think its really a game of Who Has It Worse so much as a general discontent (or concern?) that without the constraints of civilization breathing down their necks these extremely numerous and overly vocal men revert to the same kind of barbaric mentality as the stuff that drives the gangbangers in South Africa. There they are not considered ‘men’ unless they have brutalized a girl or two. Current (reported) statistics put the sexual assaults in the region to 14 rapes a second. (that seems pretty GLOBALLY DEVASTATING!!, doesn’t it Mr. Rambo?) Thats like…really high, ya know? And since most violence towards women tends to take sexual overtones, these guys throwing sexually verbal attacks around online isn’t at all very nice.(although chipmunk dood doesn’t seem especially threatening) ^_^

Um, clearly immature talk on XBL isn’t even remotely in the neighboring multiverse of the same thing as all that. But a creepily similar animosity to femininity in general seems to be prevalent in people that throw words that this site is named after, isn’t there? And then there is the guarded attitude some men seem to have when somebody brings little facts like this up. Like something is being stolen from THEM (the men). Thats pretty weird, duntcha think?

    Okidokee!!
*is done being all dark and gloomy now* XDDD

Before people know whether i am male or female in game, I am considered at least equal, as soon as people find out, i either get special treatment and people doing things that i never asked for (eg new best friends sucking up; really after something else) or i suddenly get people putting me down that didn’t care or notice me previously.    I don’t like talking on vent or party chat for this reason, everyone goes dead silent and omg its a girl…………….i just want to play my game and have fun, does it matter what gender I happen to be? Its a videogame and not real ……….
