Allies

DuckloadRa has teammates and DuckloadRa has allies, but the two are not always the same.

“We both reported this individual in Dota2′s own report system, and Steam’s report system. I’m not sure if they were ever banned. This game went on for more than 50 minutes with this user and his friends threatening to rape and kill my GF. Also, saying sexist remarks all game and harassing my GF the entire time by following her in the game and stealing gold, XP, kills and blocking her so she would die to the enemy team.”

So how often are you attacked by dota 2 players compared to your favourite fps?
Also did you release some vids about your booth at Pax yet?

  • Anonymous

A banning is too good for these guys.

  • http://www.justplainsomething.com JustPlainSomething

You know, when certain gamers say trash talking is just part of the gaming culture, I’d really like to show them this and ask if this is really what they’re looking for in multiplayer games. This is harassment and just bullying for cruelty’s sake. That’s not cool.

  • Anonymous

    This goes well beyond trash-talking.

I love trash-talking, but it’s no fun if people aren’t slinging it back.  People need to be mindful of the people they’re playing with.

  • http://www.facebook.com/smilnlol Terrie McKinley

I get this a lot too as a woman gamer. Playing games with mics sucks.  I have had some messed up stuff said to me but to threaten rape is reprehensible.  I always ask these guys how they would feel if someone talked to their mother, sister, wife or daughter like they are talking me. Ask them straight up How would you like it if I threatened to rape your daughter/sister/wife?

  • http://blog.danielburrowes.com/ Daniel B

I don’t understand how these people think it is acceptable to say these things. These people sure are tough hiding behind the internet like that. I’m sure they also just walk up to stranger in the street and threaten them with rape.

  • http://profiles.google.com/lukeredwards Luke Edwards

What I find even worse is he named himself off of a handle WhiteRa used to have, perhaps one of the nicest human beings to ever play Starcraft. :P

  • http://profiles.google.com/clayton.hughes Clayton Hughes

I wonder if this Starcraft 2′s DuckloadRa, or just somebody using that name?  I was under the impression Duckload / WhiteRa was one of the nicest SC players around.

Hi! Im actually the girl in reference to this post. My boyfriend had enough and sent it in!!! This happens id say about 8/10 games. lol… I got alot more screen shots.

  • Ágnes Német

Oh Dota…Dota, Dota (2). That the kitties of the internet that I quit thee.
Seriously, the LoL community is bad, but I’ve at least never been threatened with rape.

  • Anonymous

Why did no one in the game actually tell the harasser off though? I really thought the culture was beginning to change… but why is the majority still silent??

  • http://twitter.com/Luthi Luthi

You know you’ve been playing online for too long when you catch yourself thinking: cutesy names with hearts is just asking for trouble.

In the rare times I’ve seen someone tell the harasser off, they just got worse.  Sadly it’s just best to /ignore and report.

  • wiwille

Reporting it to the site is a good thing, but maybe someone should file a police report. Rape is no joke, and these kids need to be taught a lesson.

  • http://twitter.com/Fragrag Haryo Sukmawanto

More than likely not, WhiteRa hasn’t used that handle in a very long time and his English is a bit worse than this fellow’s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Árni-Birgir-Guðmundsson/847249382 Árni Birgir Guðmundsson

I’m pretty sure this isn’t white-ra… since he doesn’t really speak proper english ^^

  • I.C. Weiner

First of all DuckLoadRa is a reference to WhiteRa a famous SC/SC2 player renowned for his skill, manners, and class. He is also married. The person in this screen shot is obviously not him, and the fact you never make a distinction in your post is right on the line of slander. WhiteRa has sponsers, and putting stuff on the internet like this that makes it look like hes saying this stuff is not only in bad taste, it is potentially harmful to his career.

Second of all, the “Ellie” in question was playing Ancient Apparation. That is a support character. The line on how they were “following her in the game and stealing gold, XP, kills and blocking her so she would die to the enemy team” is an extreme over exaggeration. Ancient apparation is not SUPPOSED to get gold, or kills. His scaling is among the worst in the entire game. You cannot “ks” him, as he is designed to present kills to the carry in the first place. As well, he is among the slowest heroes in the game with very little escape potential and among the smallest hp pools so its not surprising that she died to the enemy a lot.

Thirdly, this is the most passive aggressive site I have ever seen in my life. I am not sure how any of this is supposed to help or fix anything. It seems to me like all this site does is to whip you all into some kind of biased frenzy, so that you can stereotype and give one side to the face of your opponents. Ironically it is this same kind of biased frenzy you claim to stand against. Maybe if you want to change the opinions of people you should offer them some sort of incentive to change, instead of passive aggressively posting their messages on some obscure website in an attempt to humiliate those who have insulted you, because, in the end, all parties involved in this poor charade seem pretty unappeased.

On the other hand, if all you want to do is pretend you are making a difference while not changing yourself, then this website seems to be the perfect place to continue to be bitter while at the same time pretending to be against bitterness.

I cannot agree more with you.

  • Anonymous

Valve is working on measures to make sure this sort of harrassment doesn’t happen – given the history with MOBAs.  I would write them with the screenshots and ask them what to do in game about it.

Edit: in recent interviews, Gabe Newall himself has said he takes this very seriously, and they’re working on gamifying the behavior out. Playing Dota 2 right now is a privelidge that this person is abusing. The proactive way would be to help them figure out ways to discourage this behavior.

  • Anonymous

…and the fact you never make a distinction in your post is right on the line of slander…

A couple of things about this:

WhiteRa may have some fame, but gaming fame only goes so far.  I never heard of the guy and I read game news sites every day.  It seems like the folks at FUoS haven’t heard of him either.  They didn’t intentionally try to slight WhiteRa.  And it would be ridiculous for them to screen every handle that gets featured here to see if someone else might be using it.  That just isn’t practical at all.

Secondly, “WhiteRa” isn’t actually used.  So how could it be confused with slander if it’s not even the player’s name?

The line on how they were “following her in the game and stealing gold, XP, kills and blocking her so she would die to the enemy team” is an extreme over exaggeration. Ancient apparation is not SUPPOSED to get gold, or kills.

I don’t know anything about DotA, so I will assume you’re 100% correct on this.  How would removing the line about kill and gold stealing change the meaning of this message at all?  Are you saying that she deserves rape threats because she played her character wrong?

This point you made is what is called a “derailment”.  It’s only superficially relevant to the topic at hand, but it pull the argument somewhere that’s completely besides the point.

…this is the most passive aggressive site I have ever seen in my life.

Okay, lets presume that this site employs a passive-aggressive strategy.  Why would that be bad?

I am not sure how any of this is supposed to help or fix anything.

It brings awareness to the issue.  It motivates people to stand up to this harassment, instead of giving silent compliance.  It shames some people into changing their behavior– people have actually come here to apologize for their terrible behavior.  Also, it does a lot of help for victims of this kind of harassment.  Often, they feel like they’re alone with this problem, and they feel better knowing that there are others that can empathize.  Furthermore, people can learn how to laugh off this kind of harassment, instead of letting it eat away at their soul.

    So, there you go.

It seems to me like all this site does is to whip you all into some kind of biased frenzy

Where do you see examples of bias or frenzy?

Maybe if you want to change the opinions of people you should offer them some sort of incentive to change…

I love how you say this, and in the same sentence say this..

instead of passive aggressively posting their messages on some obscure website in an attempt to humiliate those who have insulted you

Humiliating people by exposing the things they say isn’t an incentive to change?  Anyways, this is all completely irrelevant, since the primary goal of the site is to have a laugh.  If it changes the culture for the better, then that’s a happy byproduct.

Also, what’s with the assertion that unless something is a magic bullet that will cleanly and automatically solve a problem, then it’s not worth doing?  That’s ridiculous.  You should spend more time thinking about the things you say.

in the end, all parties involved in this poor charade seem pretty unappeased.

What makes you believe that you’re in a perspective to perceive this?

    …while not changing yourself…

This is very interesting.  In what way do you feel that the folks at FUoS need to change?

  • http://www.justplainsomething.com JustPlainSomething

Yeah, I find it most interesting that this person is outraged that FUoS didn’t distinguish that the user with a name similar to a pro-gamer isn’t actually the pro-gamer.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I know! It’s like WhiteRa is Weiner’s brother or something.

I figure that he already had a chip on his shoulder when he chose to respond, so he was just making a mad-grab for anything to be outraged about.  They say that ignorance is bliss, but ignorance can fan the flames of anger just as well.

  • Anonymous

Well, I cannot argue with the two first paragraphs since I don’t play DOTA or LoL.

The people who get their messages posted here are a**-wipes in my book. And I hardly think this site is “obscure” as have seen it referred to at places like Penny-Arcade and RockPaperShotgun (hardly obscure web pages) among others.

You call it passive aggressive and call them “just as biased” as the ass-wipes that get their messages posted on this site

This site functions as an outlet to the poor people who get subjected to the idiots that cannot behave in a civilized society. These people act like this because there is little or no repercussion to their actions, and then you blame FUoS for being biazed, having double standards and whipping up a frenzy. Why, because it in a “tongue-in-cheek” way show how many femeale players get treated on a daily basis?

And you suggest that we “offer them an incentive” for good behavior?  What prey tell do you want to give them? A brain? Common decency? Manners?

The female players is not the issue or the problem here, its the people who use this kind of slur against them. And you suggest that this site need to change? You are eloquent and coherent enough it seems, but do you really think that FUoS is the problem here?

As a Dota 2 regular I can confirm that Ancient Apparitions job is to essentially be a bit of a water boy for the team. On a further topic of note, any player in Dota 2 that deviates substantially from their role is going to get abused to a ridiculous extent, especially if they ignore earlier requests from other players and continue to make the same errors. It is an exceedingly hostile environment for all players, and you’ve just got to use the mute button liberally to enjoy the game.

The saddest part is that DuckloadRa is actually a really famous Starcraft II player known for his good manners… He goes by White-Ra now. :|

I am the person in that post. I supported like I was suppose to. The point my bf was trying to make was that he wasnt trying to play. His whole intentions that game was to follow me around. A true good support in my opinion helps get kills for the team, wards but also knows when to go off and farm a little also. Ive been playing for about 5 years and this game.. which there is only a little bit of. Was by far one of the worse games I have been abused in.

  • Anonymous

We forwarded on a replay of the game and an official complaint to steam. Ive been playing mobas for years and im use to harassment. This was just the point where my BF said that’s enough time to start doing something about it.

  • Anonymous

Well at least some of you are playing real games instead of shootan crap. Amerifat much?

And labeling anyone who disagrees as a troll and collapsing their comment is exactly why Western styled feminism should be contained in their countries and not be taken seriously in the civilized world.

Do it again, and prove me right.

I’m just glad there are girls who see the light and play Dota instead of flocking to LoL

    Bless’ya dear

Thanks for posting. It’s good to hear from the submitters.

I can’t believe someone would not only threaten and intimidate female players, but on top of that drag WhiteRa’s name through the dirt by pretending to be him. Tournament players are celebrities and have influence in the gaming community, and this kind of behaviour exploits that to spread destructive attitudes.

  • http://www.geekworld.co.za/ Thinus Swart

I was just wondering the same thing…

  • Anonymous

i wonder, what do you tell to them when they start harassing?  just report them? or ignore them?

  • Anonymous

“by following her in the game and stealing gold, XP, kills and blocking her so she would die to the enemy team.”
Ancient Apparition is a support utility hero that needs nothing but level 6 and smart positioning. SK deserves the gold, xp, and gold from kills over an AA as he requires more farm. Stop being stupid about DotA!!!

  • plusminuscons

I play a lot of DotA 2 and I can sympathise! I never, ever, ever use the mic. EVER. The most common thing I hear people say is “oh there’s a girl? gg guys” -_-

  • plusminuscons

Hum. Well there’s five people per team, and these guys are talking in “allies” chat so only their own team can hear them. If all three were friends (and thus probably the same caliber of individual) and the remaining two were this girl and her boyfriend, there probably wasn’t anyone left over to say anything. I’m guessing the girl and her bf were not dignifying this crap with a response, or they were objecting to the KS-ing etc via mic.

  • plusminuscons

Good on you both! I think it’s great that you did that.

  • plusminuscons

I know you can report players during or after the match for voice and or text abuse. I think when they get a certain number of reports they get automaticaly shunted into the low matchmaking pool as punishment… it’s hard to know how to deal with it especially if it’s large scale, but this function is at least better than nothing

  • plusminuscons

If I’m playing DotA 2, I mute them and then report them. It’s kind of annoying because it’s a team game and muting them means that you essentially can’t communicate with one person on your team, but it’s infinitely better than listening to some idiot trolololol all day long -_-

  • plusminuscons

Seriously? You think that’s an excuse for saying you’re going to rape someone?

And feeding her to the enemy team is achieving what? It’s actually sabotaging your own team to harass another player.

    Get a clue.
