StratRat1956 doesn’t seem to believe females play GoW, especially not attractive ones.

Just gears? (im a gears fangirl) Using his logic wouldn’t all games be?

I used to hear that a lot when I played l4d. “I didn’t know girls played left 4 dead.” Oh.. okay.

I wonder if he realizes he has an x chromosome, too, lol.

It’s a game about killing….females aren’t supposed to like that sort of thing. They should be playing Barbie games. >.> (being sarcastic of course)

Should I be upset and cry misandry when women are surprised to discover that I sew? Or do I accept that I happen to enjoy a hobby that is atypical for my gender and shrug it off?

There’s no malicious intent here, no insults. He’s not saying that woman can’t or shouldn’t be playing Gears. He’s just surprised to find a woman who enjoys a game that was made and marketed primarily with men in mind. What’s so wrong with that?

I will, however, grant that the awkward attempt at flirtation at the end is pretty lame and creepy, but it doesn’t even begin to compare with the vast majority of lewd, hateful and otherwise disturbing messages that have been posted here previously.

The only game my girlfriend can beat me on is GoW

The thing that irritated me was “are you sure you’re a girl? That’s a MAN’S game!” Why yes, thanks for your concern but last time I checked I had a vagina; I should have asked him if he’d like to chat with my gyno about it. Do you see where the problem lies in that statement now? I find that a million times more ignorant and rude than saying something like “wow, I think it’s awesome that you’re a woman who enjoys Gears.”

“”wow, I think it’s awesome that you’re a woman who enjoys Gears.”

And yet I’m convinced that this is closer to the sentiment that he was trying to convey. Instead, thanks to the boundless awkwardness of nerds and the inherent ambiguity of anything said online, his attempt at wit fell flat and his message was left wide open for misinterpretation. Imagine the original message with a well-placed ‘lol’ or ‘just kidding’ and see how differently it reads.

I just don’t believe that there was any real doubt over whether or not you’re a girl, and here’s the main reason why: None of the scared little man-children that make up the bulk of online gamers are going to express genuine doubt over your sexual identity and then in the very next breath compliment your looks, because that would mean that someone, somewhere, could possibly think they might be gay. And for the type of dude that this blog focuses on, that’s just about the worst thing that could happen (aside from mom forgetting to pick up Hot Pockets).

Judging from his comment I’m positive he has an overabundance of chromosomes…

You don’t often get to see the other party giving a shot in. Very nice handle by Fillytase.

i like that he is trying to be polite and flirty. much better than most of the other posts on here.

It’s not exactly that I took it as him sincerely doubting I was a woman–I feel like my profile picture made that painfully obvious–but more that he’s never heard of a female liking the series, so therefore I couldn’t possibly be a woman… joking or not. It’s just kind of annoying, and not witty at all.

Just like most girls who submit content to this site, I know how to laugh at these messages while still recognizing they’re sexist and stupid. I wasn’t hugely offended or anything, and I don’t think that assumption should be made on this blog. I found it more comical than anything, that he would suggest Gears is a “y chromosome only game” when now more than ever, women are welcomed to the franchise a la the three different playable female characters.

Do surprised women tell you they thought sewing was for XX only, question the validity of your gender, and then comment on your looks?

Aw come on. This dude doesn’t deserve to be here.

Well the inherent problem is how personally you’re taking the question, I suppose..

Having played games for many years, you probably have too and possibly can relate here, it’s not uncommon for males to advertise or come across as females. It’s happened to me on more than one occasion, and even though I might be ever so slightly more sensitive when asking if someone’s female, I always leave room for them to say “Actually no, this is my girlfriend’s account.”

Unfortunately that’s just how things are often contrived with online gaming at the moment, more so for violent console games than anything else.

Personally I think he’s just a bit socially inept, but has good intentions. (I would’ve at least added a question mark after the y chromosome remark.)

Are you SURE you’re female? You know how easy it is to mistake things.

I read this as ‘I’ve never seen a woman around these parts before’ rather than ‘No girlz allowed’ though ;)

I love the quick “save” at the end. “Girl aren’t supposed to play games!… but you sure are pretty.”
